Veenhuizen

UNESCO World Heritage since 2021

Veenhuizen. A special village with a wonderful history, where there is still plenty to see and experience today. A village in Drenthe like no other. Because Veenhuizen is a former penal colony, where more than one hundred official monuments bear witness to its unique past.

Straight avenues and stately buildings, museums, workshops, atmospheric places to eat and drink ... In Veenhuizen, without exception, they are housed in historical buildings that are moreover highly coherent. They bear witness to the history of the Colony. And surrounding it: vast tracts of nature, from peatland to stream valleys. In short, Veenhuizen has a lot to offer a lot of people.
